Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch starts out with our heroine Lucia, a child mermaid. She swims to the the surface and watches fireworks with the passengers on a nearby cruise ship. A young boy looks over the side, and starts a conversation with Lucia. She exposes herself as a mermaid, and shortly after the boy is washed overboard by a large wave. Lucia swims him to shore and stays with him until morning, leaving her pink pearl with him.
Our story takes place years later, as Lucia is about to make her transition from child to adult. She is a mermaid princess, it turns out, and needs her pearl in order to become an adult. She disguises herself as a human and attends a local school. While there, she meets Hanon, Rina, and Kaito. Like Lucia, Hanon and Rina are also exposed as mermaid princesses. Kaito, Lucia discovers, is the boy she recused so many years ago.
Lucia gets her pearl back shortly after the series begins. Kaito is attacked by a sea demon who is after the pearl (well, the pearls of all seven mermaid princesses!), and a human Lucia runs to the ocean to save him, transforming into a mermaid as she hits the water. He recognizes her as the mermaid who saved him, and returns her pearl. She then transforms into a superhero, of sorts--an idol singer who can user her songs to drive away sea demons.
Like Lucia, Hanon and Rina are also capable of transforming to fight sea demons.
Now that Lucia knows who Kaito is, she slowly begins to fall in love with him. However, Kaito is waiting for the mermaid who rescued him as a child, and who he keeps seeing. Unfortunately, if Lucia reveals who she really is to Kaito, she will turn into foam.
So, here we have our story. Three singing mermaid princesses fighting sea demons, whilst our hero and heroine are in love with a clueless hero. What more could you want? ♥
